5 Tips to Help You Stay Motivated in Life
Staying motivated in life can be difficult when you hit a low point or your motivation seems to run out. You might feel discouraged, or like you just don’t have the energy to put into the things you want to accomplish with your life, but there are some things you can do to help motivate yourself again and get back on track. Here are five tips to help you stay motivated in life!
1) Recognize Your Achievements
Acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. This will help you build confidence and keep you motivated to achieve your goals. Also, don’t forget to celebrate your successes! This will remind you of why you’re working hard and help keep you going. If you're feeling down about something that happened in the past, try to think about what you have achieved so far or what's ahead for you.
You Don't Need a Specific Goal: Goals are great and can really help motivate us, but sometimes we need a break from our routines or need some time to decompress. So give yourself permission not only to take some time off but also re-evaluate the direction of your life or career. Take a few days off and do something different, without pressure or expectation. When we step back from what we're doing it gives us perspective on what matters most which helps get back on track with achieving our goals.
2) Be Kind to Yourself
The first step to staying motivated is being kind to yourself. This means setting realistic goals and expectations and not being too hard on yourself when you make a mistake. It also means taking care of yourself physically and emotionally by eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and taking breaks when you need them. When you treat yourself well, it's easier to stay motivated. What are some ways that you can take better care of yourself? - Take Breaks: I know this sounds like something your boss might tell you but if you're anything like me, this advice won't come naturally to you. So my advice is set small goals for the day (ex: work for 2 hours then take a break) and then reward yourself after the goal has been reached with 5 minutes or 10 minutes of what ever activity floats your boat.
- Eat Healthy: We all have our favorite guilty pleasures but try limiting these foods as much as possible (or avoid them completely). Eating healthy doesn't mean depriving yourself but making conscious decisions about what we put into our bodies will make us feel more energized throughout the day.
3) Avoid Comparison
We live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with images and messages telling us that we need to be thinner, richer, and have more possessions than we currently do. It's no wonder that so many of us feel like we can't keep up. The key is to avoid comparing yourself to others. Instead, focus on your own journey and what you want to achieve. There will always be someone who has something better than you but don't let it bring you down! Focus on how great your life already is. Celebrate the little things: If you're feeling stuck, there may not be anything wrong with what you're doing but rather how much time and energy you are putting into it. To combat this feeling, make sure to give attention to all aspects of your life that bring joy. Do something nice for someone else or take some time out for yourself and get back in touch with all the good things in life.
4) Don’t Get Discouraged by Failure
It’s easy to forget why you’re doing something when you feel like you’re stuck in a rut. Maybe you’re working towards a goal that seems impossible, or maybe you just don’t enjoy what you’re doing anymore. Whatever the case may be, it’s important to remind yourself of your motives. Why did you start down this path? What are your long-term goals? Keeping your reasons at the forefront of your mind can help you stay motivated even when things get tough. Remind Yourself How Far You’ve Come: Sometimes you might look back on what you were able to accomplish and feel like all of your hard work has been for nothing. But reminding yourself of how far you’ve come can motivate you to keep going and make progress again. Surround Yourself with Positive People: As cheesy as it sounds, there is some truth behind the saying misery loves company. If people around you constantly tell themselves they aren’t good enough or that their lives are horrible, it can become difficult not to believe them. Surrounding yourself with positive people will not only boost your mood but give your self-esteem a much needed boost as well!
5) Remind Yourself Why You Do It
It’s easy to forget why we do things, especially when we’re feeling unmotivated. So, take a step back and remind yourself of your goals, both short-term and long-term. Why do you want to achieve them? What will reaching them mean for you and your life? When you have a clear understanding of your motives, it can be much easier to keep moving forward. In other words, the better you know what is motivating you, the more likely you are to stay motivated.
The next time that motivation starts to waver and feel like something just not worth doing, ask yourself: What am I really trying to accomplish with this task? or Why am I working so hard on this goal right now?
It doesn't have to be an earth-shattering answer; sometimes just reminding ourselves of the basics (i.e., I want my family to be proud of me, or I don't want my coworkers thinking I'm lazy) is enough.
This is all about finding what works best for us individually—whatever helps us tap into our inner fire.
